Methodists United for Peace with Justice is a national association of laity and clergy. We are based in Washington, D.C.

As our name "Methodists United" indicates, we seek the participation of all the Methodist family in the United States, including African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Christian Methodist Episcopal, Free Methodist, United Methodist, and Wesleyan Churches. However, we are not an official part of any Methodist denomination.

Methodists United for Peace with Justice organized in 1987 in response to the foundation document and pastoral letter of the United Methodist Council of Bishops, In Defense of Creation: The Nuclear Crisis and a Just Peace. In this document the bishops called for greater witness and action for peace and justice. With this origin we have been faithful advocates of nuclear disarmament, but we have broadened our interests to other issues. We have also widened our scope to include all Methodist denominations in the United States.

Methodists United for Peace with Justice functions in three modes:

We provide information on current issues to peace and justice advocates, local congregations, and denominational units through our publications and through this website. We provide linkages to other websites. We make information available to denominational publications for their use.

In Washington, D.C. we engage in public policy advocacy directed toward Congress and the federal executive. Through e-mail, our website, and print action alerts, we provide timely information on legislative issues to grassroots Methodists and to Methodist district and conference units. We work in coalition with like-minded organizations in the United States and abroad.

We foster collaboration on peace and justice efforts by members of the Methodist family. We work cooperatively with official denominational units. We develop proposals for consideration by denominational bodies, including annual conferences and general conferences. We also work with other denominations and religious peace fellowships.

We publish a quarterly educational bulletin called Peace Leaf. It features background information on public issues and ideas for local action. From time to time we send out Peace/Justice Alerts [link to that page] via e-mail and U.S. mail on actions citizens can take on specific public issues, especially on pending decisions being made in Washington by Congress and the President. Members of Methodists United for Peace with Justice receive all of these publications.

Methodists United for Peace with Justice is organized as a 501(c)(4) corporation under the Internal Revenue Code so that we may engage in lobbying activities on public issues. To help finance our educational activities, we have established the Methodists United Peace/Justice Education Fund, which can receive tax-deductible contributions under section 501(c)(3).

We are funded by membership dues, special donations, contributions from church bodies, foundation grants, and activity fees.

Membership in Methodists United for Peace with Justice is open individuals and organizations who accept our purpose and goals. To become a member of Methodist United for Peace with Justice, click here.

Membership dues go to our 501(c)(4) fund. Local churches and denominational units may make special contributions to this fund. Individuals and foundations can make tax-exempt contributions to the Methodists United Peace/Justice Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) entity. To make a special to the MUP/J Education fund, click here.
